The project involving our structural design of XLAM timber panels combined with steel structures for the roof of a residential complex in Milan has been completed.
PROJECT SUMMARY
The project consists of the construction of roof slabs for a residential complex of approximately 1,000 m² built with a steel structure.
The roof slabs are divided into 3 sections: 500 m² with a double-pitched roof, 290 m² with a sawtooth roof, and 180 m² flat.
In addition to the roof slabs, the floor of the first-floor access corridor and the structures of the technical shafts were also constructed in XLAM.
Four vertical technical shafts were designed, positioned against the walls of the main corridor, continuing on the roof along the pitch slope up to the ventilation chimneys. In this case, chimneys were constructed to house all the vents at the ridge.
In addition to the main panels, we handled the engineering of all elements constituting the perimeter fascias and the raised sections housing the skylights on the flat roof.
XLAM PANEL DESIGN
The design work for the XLAM panels was particularly complex due to hundreds of interferences with the steel substructure.
Each interference was taken into account and appropriate milling operations on the panels were engineered.
Approximately 200 different panels out of the 480 actually installed were drawn using specific CAD/CAM software.
This meticulous design and product engineering work ensured that within the first 5 days, almost all of the first 500 m² of the double-pitched roof slab were installed.
Within an additional 15 days, the work was completed, slowing down to allow the installation contractors to lay the systems. Upon completion of their work, the shafts were closed using the XLAM panels.
