The seismic improvement intervention of a building subject to monumental restrictions in the province of Reggio Emilia has been completed.
The intervention involved the insertion of new tie rods aimed at preventing out-of-plane overturning mechanisms of the masonry walls caused by the horizontal action of the thin brick vaults (volte in folio) resting on them. Tie rods were installed at the first floor level, while at the second floor, where it was possible to work on the extrados, the vaults were stiffened with a minimally invasive consolidation intervention in addition to the tie rods. The thin brick vaults were stiffened by reconstructing and raising the extrados stiffening ribs (frenelli) and increasing the level of the lateral infill with medium-low density material to avoid overloading the structure. The objective was to shift any potential arch kinematic mechanism upwards. The cracks present along the intersections were first cleaned and subsequently filled with a wedge and structural mortar. Other types of intervention (reinforced concrete jackets or consolidation with carbon fibers on the extrados) were evaluated but deemed unsuitable for the case in question.
A reinforced curb was constructed at the top of the masonry walls, simultaneously creating the connection with the wooden roof joists.
Interventions were designed for the roof to reinforce the connections between the wooden elements.
