multi-story XLAM
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Fornale Engineering was commissioned to develop the structural and construction design of an XLAM timber building in Carate-MB.
The building covers an area of 350 sqm with 2 above-ground floors and one basement level.
The building contains 6 residential units.

FOUNDATION STRUCTURES

The commission included the design of the foundation structures and the basement level of the building using reinforced concrete structures.
The foundation structures are of the inverted beam type, from which the reinforced concrete elevation walls of the basement area, measuring approximately 350 sqm, rise.
Six parking spaces and related storage rooms are planned for the basement level.
The intermediate floor slab is made of predalles slabs with curbs at the extrados for the installation of XLAM walls.

CLT WOOD STRUCTURES

The elevation structures are constructed with 3-layer XLAM timber panels with a thickness of 100 mm.
The first intermediate floor slab is made of CLT timber panels of variable thickness depending on the design spans; part of the building has a 200 mm thick slab and the other part has a 240 mm thick slab.
The first-floor walls continue up to the roof with different heights to recreate the architectural design requested by the architect.
The XLAM timber stairwell/elevator shaft is located at the center of the building.

XLAM STAIRWELL AND ELEVATOR SHAFT

The stairwell and elevator shaft are designed in XLAM timber.

The stair flights are slabs made of XLAM panels with steps made from laminated timber beams placed on top.
A technical room for the installation of heating equipment is located at the upper end of the shaft, from which access to the roof slabs is also possible.
