PROJECT SUMMARY
The project consists of the construction of a timber and steel extension to the headquarters in Parco delle Colombare, Verona, in addition to the works for the creation of the park featuring traditional games.
The extension is developed on the same level as the existing building with a cantilevered extension.
At the level of the existing structures, a classroom with auxiliary spaces for the public and two terraces on both sides have been built.
The north terrace has a surface area of approximately 65 sqm and includes a portion covered by a glulam canopy.
The south terrace has a surface area of approximately 25 sqm.
At the basement level, beneath the cantilever, there is a technical room with storage and restrooms.

STRUCTURAL MODEL
Despite being a modest project in terms of size and cost, several structural challenges were addressed due to the building’s position on the slope and its interaction with the existing portion.
The foundation structures vary depending on the level. There is a raft foundation at the basement level and inverted beam foundations beneath the steel columns. These are arranged at different heights.

From the foundation structures, the steel structures rise with 240 mm round columns.
Above the columns, a grid of steel beams was designed, some of which are cantilevered, supporting a composite steel-concrete slab in some areas and a timber structure with larch slats in others.

The extrados of the concrete slab serves as the bearing surface for the timber structures.
The timber walls are built using a platform-frame system constructed on-site.
Given the nature of the site and the logistical difficulties, the choice of this system was certainly successful.
The roof slab for the rooms and the canopy is made of glulam.
A characteristic feature of the canopy is the cylindrical column, tapered at the ends to simulate the typical “scianco” used in traditional Veronese games.

MATERIALS USED
The complexity of the project lay in designing and managing the operational phase of structural works that were very different from one another, each with specific construction peculiarities: reinforced concrete, steel, and finally timber.
Standard Rck25/30 concrete, B450C steel, and S275 structural steel were used.
Regarding the timber structures, we designed frames with duo-beam studs and transoms and OSB3 bracing panels on one side of the walls.
The roof structures are made of GL24h glulam.

PROFESSIONAL ASSIGNMENT
For this contract, we carried out the following assignment:
- final and executive design of the concrete, steel, and timber structural works;
- structural works supervision.
