STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF TIMBER SCHOOL

Fornale Engineering was commissioned to carry out the final design of the new timber school with a civic center in Monzuno, BO.
The building is designed with platform-frame timber structures.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The engineering firm Fornale Engineering handled the structural design of the entire project.
The timber school covers a floor area of approximately 750 sqm and is a two-story building with a multi-pitched roof.
Adjacent to the main building is the civic center, intended for a variety of community functions.

This portion of the building is a single-story structure with a maximum ridge height of approximately 9 m.

FOUNDATION STRUCTURES

We managed the design of the reinforced concrete foundation structures.
Inverted beam foundations are planned, filled with a ventilated crawl space composed of prefabricated polyethylene modules.
Reinforced concrete curbs were provided for the installation of the timber frame walls.

SUPERSTRUCTURE

The superstructures are made of prefabricated timber frame walls.
The thickness of the walls varies according to the axial stress acting upon them, with the minimum thickness of the timber studs ranging from 120 mm to 180 mm.

Suitable cladding is provided where necessary to ensure R60 fire resistance.

INTERMEDIATE FLOORS AND ROOFING

The intermediate floor is made of glulam beams with overlying timber boarding and bracing panels.
The roof structures have glulam beams with overlying boarding and panels.
The fire resistance of the glulam structures is ensured by oversizing the load-bearing sections.
In the civic center area, there are “broken” glulam trusses with a net span of 18 m.
