Timber School Design
ASSIGNMENT

Fornale Engineering was commissioned for the structural design of the new Leopardi middle school in Trofarello: a new school building in CLT timber.

Our assignment included the executive structural design of both CLT timber and glulam works, as well as the concrete foundation works.

The BIM model of the structural works was developed.

BUILDING DESCRIPTION

The building consists of 3 classroom blocks connected by 2 connecting sections.

The total floor area is 1,714 m².

The two blocks at the ends are developed over 2 floors and have a floor area of 590 m² and 442 m² respectively.

The central block, which houses the auditorium on the ground floor, is developed mainly over 2 floors with a portion on the third floor. It has a floor area of 530 m².

The connecting sections, seismically isolated from the main structures, are developed over 2 floors and have a floor area of 76 m².

The stairs connecting the floors are located in the connecting sections and in the central block between the first and second floor.

The structure was designed to be fire-resistant R60.

STRUCTURAL SCHEME

The building is located in a seismic zone with ground acceleration of 0.1g.

The foundation structures are designed with a base at -1.6 m elevation due to the existing footing foundations of the building to be demolished.

A foundation slab extending 1,820 m² with a thickness of 40 cm is provided, with retaining walls and igloo formwork of appropriate height.

The above-ground elevation structures are constructed with CLT timber panels with thickness varying between 120 and 160 mm.

The intermediate floor slabs are constructed with a framework of glulam beams with overlying CLT timber panels 60 mm thick.

Near the auditorium and dining hall, we designed coupled HEA500 steel beams due to the significant dimensions of the structural span.

The 3 building sections are connected by predominantly glazed connecting sections constructed with a steel framework and CLT slab.

All CLT timber slabs ensure high performance in terms of vibration verification.

MATERIALS USED
  • CONCRETE: 1,175 m³
  • REINFORCEMENT STEEL: 58 tons
  • STRUCTURAL STEEL: 64 tons
  • GLULAM TIMBER: 254 m³
  • CLT PANELS (various thicknesses): 8,356 m² for a total of 792 m³

In this project, a total of 1,046 m³ of structural timber was used.
