Multi-story CLT and glulam timber building in Chioggia

, , , ,
multi-story CLT timber building
BUILDING DESCRIPTION

Studifornale.it was responsible for the structural design of this multi-story building with a hybrid timber-concrete structure.

The building spans a total of 6 floors and features a reinforced concrete load-bearing bracing core.
Each floor measures 260 m² and houses 2-3 apartments depending on the level.
The ground floor contains garages and utility rooms, while the top floor consists of a single apartment.

STRUCTURAL SCHEME

The building is constructed with a concrete bracing stairwell responsible for horizontal seismic and wind loads.
Vertical loads are transferred through a system of glulam beams and columns coupled with CLT walls along the building’s perimeter.
The floor slabs are made of CLT timber and are 180 mm thick.
We designed the CLT and glulam load-bearing structures to achieve R60 fire resistance, with particular attention paid to structural robustness.
The calculation model took into account the stiffness of the core/CLT connection systems to evaluate mutual displacements/stresses.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Fornale Engineering handled the executive structural design of:

  • glulam timber structures;
  • CLT timber structures;
  • custom steel connection systems for the concrete core connection;
    steel structures;
  • acoustic profiles used for the acoustic decoupling of floor slabs between the various apartments.

Fornale Engineering carried out the structural construction management.

MATERIALS USED

The following were used for the construction of this building:

  • 1,400 m² of CLT for walls with variable thicknesses of 100 and 160 mm:
  • 870 m² of CLT for 180 mm thick floor slabs:
  • 40 m³ of GLT glulam timber for beams and columns.
