Design of 2 CLT Timber Buildings in Verona

CLT building Verona
PROJECT SUMMARY

Two buildings were designed, each with 3 above-ground floors and a basement level used as a garage and tavern for both structures.

We designed the foundation structures as inverted reinforced concrete beams over a total surface area of approximately 700 m².

Prefabricated floor slabs were specified, partly in hollow-core concrete and partly with predalles slabs.

CLT TIMBER WALL PANELS

The two buildings were constructed with vertical load-bearing CLT timber panels and timber-concrete composite floors.

One building was constructed using CLT timber from Hasslacher, while the other was built with CLT timber from Merk.

In the first case, the building covers approximately 190 m² per floor, while in the second case approximately 120 m².

In both cases, 10 cm thick 5-layer panels were used.

TIMBER-CONCRETE COMPOSITE FLOORS

Intermediate floors were designed with glued laminated timber beams made composite with the concrete topping.

To create the necessary composite action, screws inclined at 45 degrees were used.

ELEVATOR SHAFTS

The elevator shafts were constructed with CLT timber panels for both buildings.

Internal plasterboard cladding was specified to ensure fire resistance requirements.

In one building, the elevator shaft passes through the apartments; in the other, it is positioned at the center of the stairwell to which the stair treads are anchored.

PROFESSIONAL ASSIGNMENT

Fornale Engineering was responsible for:

  • detailed design of foundation and underground works for the entire project;
  • detailed design of the above-ground and floor timber structures for the buildings.
