Parametric optimization of a 25,000 sq m timber roof in São Paulo, Brazil _ from studiofornale on Vimeo.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In this project, Fornale Engineering was commissioned to research the optimal structural solution for the construction of a roof.
This is the roof of a large 25,000 sqm logistics hub to be built in São Paulo, Brazil.
The roof will be constructed using GLT (Glue Laminated Timber).
When working on roofs of this scale, it is crucial to optimize both the timber structures and the related connection systems. Small differences and cost savings can prove fundamental in securing major contracts.
To optimize the roof, we chose to utilize parametric modeling tools.

APPLIED STRATEGY
The roof consists of 50 modules measuring 22×22.5 m.
We tested various solutions in terms of both static schemes and their dimensions.
One of the design constraints was a maximum beam length of 11.8 m due to the dimensions of shipping containers.
The objective was to find the most cost-effective solution for the timber/connection system.
COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN
We chose to employ computational design tools to automate the structural optimization process.
It was necessary to evaluate numerical solutions for structural deformation and weight as various parameters changed.
We analyzed three different scenarios: beams with a “moment-resisting” joint at the midpoint (due to shipping dimensions), trusses, and 3D trusses.
The model was geometrically discretized for each configuration using the Grasshopper plugin, developed in FEM mode via the Karamba plugin, and finally optimized with the Octopus plugin.

RESULTS
For each static scheme, the connection systems were sized and their relative stiffnesses were modeled.
The iterative process concluded with the optimization of the glulam structures and the related connection system (which is decisive in terms of stiffness for determining deformations).
At the end of the process, the costs associated with the glulam, the connection systems, and the steel plates required for the connections were calculated.
