This project for the new CLT wood church for the community of Casalnuovo di Napoli was awarded 2nd Prize.
A very interesting project that involved us as structural consultants for the Eusebi&Partners architecture firm.

PROJECT SUMMARY
The design concept involved the creation of two square-based volumes measuring 22x22x22m connected by a tunnel.
The first is used as a church and the other for the parish’s multi-purpose activities.
The roof slab of the church is shaped like a hyperbolic paraboloid, while CLT flat slabs are planned for the volume dedicated to community services.
LOAD-BEARING STRUCTURE OF THE CHURCH

The walls of the church, with a maximum height of 22m, are designed as a “box-type” structure. They consist of glulam columns working in conjunction with CLT wood panels on both sides.
The roof slab is composed of a grid of glulam beams to create a hyperbolic paraboloid.
We designed a structural grid consisting of compressed concave glulam arches and convex glulam beams in tension.
The structural grid was optimized to limit thrust and tension on the heads of the facade columns.

LOAD-BEARING STRUCTURES OF THE RECTORY AREA
The load-bearing structures of the area dedicated to public spaces are regular and simple.
CLT wood walls were designed on the ground floor, continuing up to the roof. A large portico area with glulam columns is also included.
The flat slabs were designed in CLT wood.
PROFESSIONAL ASSIGNMENT
Preliminary design of CLT wood structures, box-type walls, and hyperbolic glulam roof slab.
