CLT and Steel for Co-Housing in Milan

CLT and steel in Milan
Project description

The project involved the structural design of a residential co-housing complex in CLT wood and steel in the Niguarda area of Milan.

The project covers approximately 900 m² across 2 building structures whose final volume is identical to that of the previous demolished industrial building.

The main structure has a rectangular shape of approximately 480 m² in plan, develops over 3 floors, and has a dual-pitch roof. The second structure, with plan dimensions of approximately 390 m², develops over 2 floors and has the characteristic sawtooth shape.

CLT Wood Structural Design

In this case, the structural design of the CLT wood on the pitches was relatively straightforward despite the complex geometry.

The cable ducts and service passages constructed with specific CLT wood structures required much more attention.

DfMA and Shop Drawings

The work of preparing shop drawings and managing the project through our DfMA software was particularly complex due to hundreds of interferences with the steel substructure.

Each interference was taken into consideration and appropriate milling and tolerances on the panels were engineered.

This meticulous work allowed the installation of all the first 500 m² of the dual-pitch floor slab within the first 5 days without any issues. Upon completion of the service installation work, the closure of the ducts was carried out using the CLT panels.
