Interview at Milan Fuori Salone: modular timber construction with MODOM and STUDIOFORNALE.IT

,

During the 2017 Fuori Salone del Mobile, Giorgio Tartaro interviewed us at the BASE space, where the MODOM prefabricated timber housing module was on display.

WHAT IS MODOM

MODOM is a start-up from the Marche region that has developed a modular, expandable, and stackable housing system with extremely high energy performance and an attractive design.

MODOM combines architecture, design, and innovation.

At the Fuori Salone, a small-scale exhibition module was presented to the public to showcase the possible interior and exterior finishes.

The interior was lined with oak boards and cork, while the exterior was clad with fiber cement sheets.

WHAT STUDIOFORNALE.IT DID FOR MODOM

Fornale Engineering.it was responsible for the development and engineering of the timber load-bearing structures and the module’s connections.

We initially defined the module’s field of application (altitude, snow load, wind load, etc.) with the MODOM team to ensure the module’s adaptability for a wide audience.

We conducted a study on materials and performance (Kerto, KVH, SWP, etc.) and selected those best suited for our project.

A parametric FEM numerical model was created, managed by a Visual Basic application we implemented, which allowed us to modify and evaluate different types of connections and their spacing.

Based on the results obtained from the iterations, the most efficient and cost-effective connection system was chosen.
