CLT wood expansion of a farm in Verona: work in progress

, ,

Work continues on the project aimed at expanding a farm through the use of CLT wood and the seismic retrofitting of the existing building.

BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The intervention initially involved the expansion of the existing building on both sides with reinforced concrete structures and foundations and predalles slab floors.

The initial footprint has increased from approximately 120 sq m to the current 260 sq m.

The existing upper floor was completely demolished and a CLT wood house was rebuilt over a large area of approximately 240 sq m.

The existing portion of the building will be seismically retrofitted according to the new geometry of the building.

MATERIALS USED

100 mm CLT wood panels were used for the load-bearing structures and glulam from Val di Fiemme for the roof slab.

The walls are insulated on the outside with 12 cm of high-density rock wool, on which a 25 mm thick wood-cement plaster base panel is installed to improve the mechanical performance of the external envelope; meanwhile, a 10 cm thick counter-wall with plasterboard and fiber-reinforced gypsum insulated with glass fiber was created on the inside.

The roof slab was insulated with 20 cm of wood fiber with a density of 160 kg/m³, to which a 2 cm wood fiber panel with a density of 240 kg/m³ was added.

TECHNICAL SYSTEMS

The building will be heated by a wood-burning boiler; a heat pump is planned as an auxiliary system in case of a lack of wood to manage the underfloor heating system (the latter will be powered by the photovoltaic system and related storage batteries).

A 5 kWp photovoltaic system with a storage battery system has been installed.

The smart home electrical system for managing systems, consumption, and automation (skylights, motorized shading curtains, etc.) is currently under construction.

The 8,000 l capacity rainwater collection tank is currently being installed.

Although the client did not wish to certify the building according to the latest protocols (Passive House, Arca, KlimaHouse, etc.), its energy performance is of absolute significance.

We look forward to starting the monitoring to see if it is as energy self-sufficient as we expect!
