We present the final design of the timber school with a CLT structure, for which we carried out the final structural design.
This project was carried out as part of a joint venture and prepared for the awarding of the integrated design-build contract for the construction of the school in Novate Milanese.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The project was designed in view of the imminent demolition of the existing school complex.
The new building covers approximately 1,500 m² across two floors and was designed to accommodate 15 classrooms for a total of approximately 375 students.
An auditorium connected to the building was also designed, accessible from the outside for activities involving the entire community.
DESCRIPTION OF THE CLT AND GLULAM LOAD-BEARING STRUCTURES
The vertical load-bearing structures consist of 12 cm thick, 5-layer CLT panels. In addition to the CLT walls, external glulam columns are planned with terminal “braces” that evoke the idea of a tree and are necessary to support the eave overhangs, which reach up to 5 m in some areas.
Concrete-filled steel columns were planned to frame the internal garden along the glass walls.
This ensures both high mechanical performance and R60 fire resistance with reduced sections.
The floors consist of a glulam beam system topped with 60 mm thick, 3-layer CLT panels. GL32c glulam was selected for the beams to optimize structural costs and reduce the thickness of the intermediate floor slabs.
The unique feature of the structure is the roof deck, which curves upward from the perimeter to reach its highest point near the internal winter garden.
A radial arrangement of curved GL32c glulam beams was planned, positioned every 12°, with secondary beams of variable section along the axis of the main beams.
In addition to the timber elevation works, the reinforced concrete foundation structures were designed at the final stage.
